Texture matching is the part of drywall repair most people get wrong. A patch can be flawless underneath and still stick out like a sore thumb if the texture doesn't blend. Bend Drywall Repair Pros treats this as its own skill, not an afterthought tacked onto a patch job.

Bend's housing stock spans decades. Newer builds from the 90s and 2000s growth wave usually carry knockdown or orange peel, while older homes still have popcorn ceilings from before that era. Whatever's on your wall, we match it, not replace it with something close enough.

Materials and Methods for Texture Matching

  • Hopper gun photo

    Hopper gun with adjustable nozzle

Lets us dial in splatter size to match knockdown or orange peel exactly, rather than guessing with a spray can.

  • Knockdown knife photo

    Knockdown taping knife

Timed correctly against compound set time, this is what flattens the splatter into that classic knockdown look.

  • Texture spray cans photo

    Compound viscosity adjustment

Thinner mix for orange peel, thicker for heavier knockdown texture, mixed on-site to match your wall.

  • Air compressor and nozzle tips photo

    Popcorn-style texture (for older homes)

Matched by hand or spray for pre-90s ceilings that still carry the original acoustic texture.

  • Primer sealer coat

    Smooth level-5 skim coat

For homes with a smooth painted finish, skim coating the patch flat instead of texturing over it.

  • Drywall Repair Thinned joint compound mix photo

    Feathering technique with wide-blade knives

Blends patch edges gradually into the surrounding wall so there's no visible ring or ridge.

When to call

When to Call for Texture Matching

If a previous patch shows up as an obvious circle or smear every time the light hits it wrong, that's a texture problem, not a patch problem. Same goes for mismatched texture left behind after a plumber or electrician cut into a wall. Call us and we'll blend it properly.

FAQs

Texture Matching FAQs

How do I match texture on an old ceiling, mine's from the 80s?

Older ceilings usually carry an original popcorn or hand-applied texture. We match it by adjusting spray density and, in some cases, hand-dabbing to mimic the original pattern before it goes paint-ready.

Can you match knockdown texture without redoing the whole wall?

That's most of what we do. We feather the new texture out past the patch edge so it blends gradually instead of stopping in a hard line.

Why does my DIY texture patch look wrong?

Usually it's timing. Knockdown compound has to be knocked down at exactly the right moisture level, too early or too late and the pattern won't match. It also takes practice matching splatter size to the existing wall.

Does texture matching cost extra on top of a patch?

Sometimes it's bundled into patch pricing for small repairs. Larger or more complex texture blends get priced separately since the labor and feathering area is bigger.

Will the texture ever look completely invisible?

In good lighting, yes, for most jobs. We can't promise a perfect match on every wall (some old textures are just uneven to begin with) but that's exactly why we test on scrap board first when there's doubt.
